Remember when we were young…

Remember when…

We would enthusiastically wait for our favourite song to play on the radio and we would try and tape it on a blank “audio cassette” and get irritated when the DJ would talk over the end of the song.

Going to the public library and rummaging through the kids section for a Famous Five book I hadn’t read yet.

What would you do if I sang out of tune? Would you stand up and walk out on me? Lend me your ears and I’ll sing you a song. I will try not to sing out of key, yeah…. Wonder years.

Hanging up kitsch eighty’s Christmas decorations on the ceiling, while listening to Boney M on the record player….come they told me pa rum pum pum pum!

Disco lights, Primary School hall, standing on the side and eagerly hoping someone will ask me to dance to Glen Medeiros’s Nothings gonna change my love for you.

Sitting with your girlfriends at break with the paper fortune thing and predicting your life with them.

Tanning without cooking oil and sunlight soap in your hair wasn’t cool

July school holidays involved choosing sides between Martina Navratilova and Chrissy Evert.

Taking your skipping rope to school was hip so we could play “not last night but the night before, 24 robbers came knocking on my door…”

Ann of Green Gables, Gone with the Wind and the Golden Girls.

…and then we grew up a bit ~

Pleading with my mom to drop us off a street down from the party because her yellow beetle would backfire at the most inopportune times.

Rustlers Valley, Oppikoppi and Woodstock….what wild weekends they were!

Cheese Whizz Burgers from the local Roadhouse or dodgy boerewors rolls at 2 in the morning just opposite the Carlton Centre.

Doctor Martins and head banging to the Pixie’s in Marshall street was a weekly affair.

Oh what fun we had! I hope my kids will look back at their childhood and it will summon up the same good memories mine do.

If you carry your childhood with you, you never become older.  ~Tom Stoppard
